Ok. Let’s try this thing again…

If you’re new here and joining us from Calling it Home – welcome! I’ll get to the fun stuff in a minute.  There’s just one thing I need to get off my chest first…

So I think it’s pretty clear at this point that we VASTLY overestimated our ability to blog regularly while undergoing a major renovation. If you follow us on Instagram, you know that we’ve made a whole lot of progress since our last real blog update. That’s because I’ve finally realized that maintaining the blog, while trying to juggle a full time job, raising a 5 year old, and spending essentially every moment of what little waking hours are left working on finishing the house, was a hugely unrealistic endeavor.  And I say that knowing that there are so many amazing DIY bloggers out there that would probably read this and shake their collective heads at the amateurs.  But I’m ok with that.

That said, we started this blog so that 20 years from now we’d be able to look back on this and read all about our journey on this crazy road. And right now, we’re failing at telling the story.  So with that in mind we’re joining in the One Room Challenge Linking Event, so that if nothing else, we have a blog goal of 1 post every week (at least for the next 6) to keep things current around here.

What is the One Room Challenge you ask?  Well for those of you who don’t know, twice a year, Linda over at Calling it Home, hosts a challenge where 20 designers are invited to transform a space in real-time over a 6 week period. Each week they share their progress, challenges & finally the reveal.  Along with the ‘chosen 20’ bloggers from all over play along and share their projects in the linking round.

If you remember, the last One Room Challenge we participated in didn’t exactly go as planned. Operation Organized Entryway, as it turns out was a bit of a bust.  As of right now, it remains unfinished – simply because in the grand scheme of things, we realized we had more important projects that we needed to focus on – like you know, getting a functioning bathroom for example…

But back to the topic at hand…

One Room Challenge, Spring 2015

One Room Challenge Linking Participant

This time around, we opted to tackle a space that when it’s complete, will bring the Dreamhouse 1 serious step closer to being move-in ready. Our master bedroom. But of course, in true Kes & Tash ridiculous over achiever fashion, you know we would never be satisfied with just the bedroom right!?  Not likely.  Because we’ve clearly learned nothing from taking on too much in the last challenge, and because our open floorplan means technically it’s all one room, we’re taking on not just the bedroom, but the en-suite as well.

The before:

So here’s what we’re dealing with…

The Bedroom

Thankfully we had the carpet installed in February so there isn’t actually much to be done in our bedroom aside from paint, trim & baseboards and furniture.

Oh yea –  and do something with that unsightly ripped apart wall…

En-suite

A complete, blank canvas.

The plan:

Here’s what we have in mind for the #DreamBedroom & #MasterBathRetreat

  • Create a feature wall behind the bed (the wall that ‘s currently torn open for the plumbing in the en-suite)
  • Install in-floor heating mat in the en-suite
  • Build shower base & waterproof walls
  • Lay Ditra underlayment & tile bathroom floors
  • Tile shower floor & walls
  • Paint entire space
  • Hang vanity & install countertop
  • Trim & baseboards
  • Decorate!!

It’s a pretty big list I know, but I’m feeling strangely optimistic this time around. I don’t know if it’s the warmth of spring that’s finally in the air, the sheer determination we feel to get to the finish line, or that we’re just plain delusional (maybe a combination of all 3, lol) but I just feel like “we got this. I guess that’s the right perspective to take right?! Cards all in, here we go!!

Wondering how it’ll all come together? Check back next Thursday when we’ll break down our colour scheme, the plan for the feature wall & take you along with us as we source our bathroom fixtures. You can also check out our Master Suite Inspiration board for some of the looks that inspired our plan…Follow The Dreamhouse Project’s board Master Suite Inspiration on Pinterest.

So what do you think? Did we bite off more than we can chew again this time? Let us know in the comments!

Don’t forget to check back every Thursday when we’ll be sharing our progress on the #DreamBedroom & #MasterBathRetreat. Oh – and make sure to follow along on all the other ‘One Room’ Challenge projects here.

What great spaces with lots of light and I’m loving the black windows. You can do this! I have faith in you!

I so admire your honesty and ambition! I started my blog for the exact same reason, so that in 20 years we could look back and see our accomplishments. I would imagine that so many of those amazing DIY bloggers know exactly where you are coming from. It’s so not easy to maintain a project from start to finish, while taking photographs, writing posts, and finding the time to bring it all together and hit “publish.”

Just remember why you’re doing this and what your goals are and everything will come together, I have faith too! : )

Thanks so much Michaela! You’re so right. Sometimes you just have to stop & take not of why you’re doing it all. Thanks for the support. And I’ll definitely be following along on your guest room transformation. 🙂

Haha…thanks honey! Your support really does mean a lot! I’m excited for your office as well! Our office is literally the very last room on our list so I know it’s gonna be quite a while until I have a dedicated work space of my own.
