A “Modern Marvel” Boy’s Bedroom
WE DID IT!!! It’s reveal day of this 6 week One Room Challenge and we couldn’t be more excited for this one. We took our son’s big, empty, boring space & turned it into a modern superhero bedroom worthy of a Wakandan King! So without further ado, welcome to Kash’s “Modern Marvel” Bedroom!

If I’m being perfectly honest, this was one ORC that I had serious doubts we’d be able to finish in time. If you saw the chaotic state of this room just 2 days ago, you might have thought we were crazy – and you’d probably have been right, lol! But I have to say that Kes’ sheer determination to get us to the finish line this time around was next level. He took 2 days off work and essentially worked around the clock for the last 4 days straight to get us here. I bow down to his awesomeness.
In case you’re new here, or have forgotten where we started, let’s take a look back at Kash’s room just 6 weeks ago.
Before:
And now…
After:
It took so many elements to bring our vision for this modern superhero bedroom to life. From the geometric wall, to the desk & bench, to the superhero light boxes, the hex shelves, and a TON of sewing, this room definitely had the most DIY projects we’ve ever tackled in one space.
The geometric feature wall is the biggest show stopping element in the space. It’s so cool to see what started as a crazy idea we had come to life so much more brilliantly than we could have imagined. We partnered with Metrie using their 3″ flat stock MDF to create the geometric pattern and then backlit them with LED tape lights from Kichler. We painted everything in PARA Paints Philosophical (412E) from the Color Journeys collection. If you remember, our overall inspiration for the space came from Hannah Beachler’s production design from Marvel’s Black Panther movie. We definitely feel like the wall captures the vibe of Shuri’s Wakandan lab.
I love how the detailing of the headboard plays off of the light from the wall. We were fortunate to partner with The Brick who provided Kash with new bedroom furniture. We chose the Stanton queen platform bed & chest in white because of it’s clean, contemporary lines. The high-gloss finish really does make a perfect compliment to the design of the space.
The desk with attached bench seating was one of the larger DIYs in the space. We designed the desk to have a mid-century modern feel and we’re pretty happy with how it turned out. The desk will be a great spot for Kash to do homework.
The bench seating attached to the desk is the perfect spot to cozy up with a good book. As a kid I always wanted to have a window bench. I used to imagine curling up on one to read or relax on a sunny afternoon. Kash is going to love sitting here! The throw pillows are a combination of some pre-made pillows from Tonic Living and a few that my Mom & I sewed ourselves using a few selections of their incredible fabrics. They are the perfect addition and add just the right amount of pattern & texture to create a comfy reading nook.
The superhero light boxes were another DIY that morphed from a crazy brainchild into something truly awesome! In creating a modern superhero bedroom, we knew it would be important to have some superhero iconography on the walls but we needed to do so in a way that would stay true to our vision of keeping things sleek & modern. Enter a few light boxes. To create them, we had the vector art cut out of flat stock aluminum. We then attached them to frames that we built from 1×3″ pine and plexiglass. We backlit the frames with some more LED tape lights from Kichler. The Marvel fangirl in me just might have squealed after seeing these all lit up when we first got them installed!
The ceiling light, the Moderne from Kichler, is another piece Kes and I absolutely fell in love with. If you follow us on Instagram and saw our story a few weeks ago, you might remember that we were somewhat torn between this fixture and another one. We were initially hesitant because we weren’t sure that it would provide enough light given the scale of the room. Once it arrived though and Kes and I took one look at it, there was absolutely no other choice. King T’Challa doesn’t wear a crown in the Black Panther movie, but I like to think that if he did, it would look something like this.
Kash absoutely loves his new room! It’s been a long time coming for him to have a space worthy of his larger than life personality. This room definitely lives up to it now. Creating this space for him was a lot of hard work – especially in the final few days. But seeing his face light up at the sight of his new room, was worth every second of those sleepless nights!
We want to send a HUGE thank you to all of our incredible sponsors on this project. We literally could not have completed this room without their support.
The Brick | Kichler Lighting | Metrie | Minwax Canada | PARA Paints | RYOBI Canada | Tonic Living
We also need to thank all of you that reached out with so many supportive comments throughout this. We definitely appreciated it – especially when things got down to the wire and we weren’t sure if we’d make it.
Thanks also to Linda and her One Room Challenge team, House Beautiful, and the Home Love Network for organizing such an amazing and inspiring online event. Literally every completed space in the Dreamhouse has come as a result of the ORC.

Absolutely beautiful! Sorry I wasn’t there to actually see him walk in that room. I’m sure he’ll enjoy having lots of fun in his room. You and Kes are awesome parents!
Tash @ thedreamhouseproject
Thanks mom! I’m sure he’ll have you over for many sleep overs! ??
Casey Bond
I LOVE this!!! I cant believe you pulled off a superhero room that wasnt covered in red and blue and that he would instantly grow out of. This room is so cool!
Tash @ thedreamhouseproject
Thanks Casey!! That’s exactly what we were going for… a kids room that will grow with him and not feel like an 8 year olds room in 3-5 years.
KathleenC
Wow! Just… wow! Also Woooooooow!!! There are probably other, slightly more intelligent, things I could say about the detail, the sleek surfaces and interesting geometry, the way this can so easily grow up with him for many years… But I keep coming back to the simple but eloquent… WOW.
Tash @ thedreamhouseproject
LOL! Thanks so much Kathleen! “Wow” works. I know it’s the word I use most myself. It really came together even better than I could have ever envisioned it.
Brandon Heard

This might be my favourite room in your impressive DIY’d house. You’ve created something that seems so perfect for Kash and I can imagine when he’s an adult he’ll remember that incredible bedroom his parents so lovingly made for him. The furniture, the colours, the bedding and rug – you brought it all together so perfectly!!

THIS is a show stopping space – it goes beyond (and then some) amazing! I don’t even know where to begin, but I’ll give it a go… warning this comment will be gushy! 😉 The lighting is spectacular and the ceiling light is the only choice – perfect! That wall, oh my design loving heart is going crazy for that wall – I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to have taken in every single DIY detail of that, WOW! I have to go and see all of the weeks combined work – I NEED all the details! There are so many favourites but that desk, window seat is the icing on this stunning cake! Guys – I am speechless. haha this is me being speechless. 😉
