Our Dream Bedroom before the bedroom makeover | The Dreamhouse Project

We made it to week 2 of our One Room Challenge master bedroom makeover. If you missed last week, you can head there now to get up to speed with our vision for the completed space. Today we’ll give you a glimpse inside the bedroom as it is now & fill you in on what we’ve been up to over the last week.

If you’re a regular follower of our blog or if you’ve ever taken on any renovation project you’ll know that the feeling of taking 2 steps forward & then 3 steps back is sort of a common thing. Well this project is no exception. I mean what kind of project would it be without a few setbacks right? You’d think we’d be used to this by now. Sigh… so here’s how our week went…

Where we started:

Here’s how our bedroom looks today – probably the most uninspiring space in the house.

Our Dream Bedroom before the bedroom makeover | The Dreamhouse Project Our Dream Bedroom before the bedroom makeover | The Dreamhouse Project

Between the unfinished wall behind the bed, the unpainted walls everywhere else & the ivory carpet, you can understand why we’re eager to bring some colour in here.

Two steps forward…

We spent the weekend compiling all of the pallets we’d accumulated onto our driveway to begin disassembling them. We figured this would be the easiest way to take stock of how much wood we have for the feature wall & whether or not we’ll need to get more. I was talking to my friend about keeping costs down and she recommended to me that I look into changing my energy providers. She went onto recommend Simply Switch and I must say I saved a bunch of money.

We’ve been accumulating these pallets over the last 4 years or so since we started working on the Dreamhouse. We had them sitting in the backyard which has weathered them even better than I could have imagined. I mean look at these boards! Alllll the heart eye emojis you guys! I can’t wait to see how they look once we get them stained.

So all in all the week started off well. We made some headway on the pallets. We got our paint ordered. A slow start to be sure, but with the long weekend ahead, we were feeling positive…

and then…

Two steps back…

Monday evening, we came home from work to find this:

Ivory carpet stained with cat vomit
Our 20 year old cat, Tiger, had somehow managed to get himself locked in our bedroom and then proceeded to vomit on our ivory carpet. Awesome. I immediately set about spot cleaning the stain, but after having sat in the sunlight & baked into the carpet for Lord knows how many hours that day, this stain just does not want to leave. It’s right in the middle of the floor, and even after my cleaning efforts you can still see the discolouration in the carpet. And the smell….I can’t even!

We’re hoping a good professional carpet cleaning will do the trick, but I’m skeptical. THIS was exactly my fear when we made the decision to install carpet in the bedrooms in the first place. At the time though, we needed to make cuts to the reno budget and the extra cost to continue the hardwood into the bedrooms was low hanging fruit. Of course, tearing out the carpet now is SO not in our planned budget for this project either, but I digress…

Oh and, I almost forgot!! Did I mention that we had to cancel our order for the bed that we wanted because we found out that it won’t get here in time?? We’d already ordered our mattress, I was surprised there was so many mattress sizes available!

Yea…so that happened.

So here we are, just a week into the bedroom makeover, without a bed, and already considering the possibility of blowing the budget on new floors. At least with the long weekend coming up, the extra day will hopefully allow us to make some real progress on our to-do list. There are so many things, I don’t know where to start! One thing I am considering doing is making the most of the space in the room by including a sort of small home office. I haven’t totally decided yet, but a friend of mine did this is because her apartment was so small (had no choice basically). Nonetheless, I do really think it might work. Although I need to research some office desks first!

To do:

  • Purchase new bed
  • Finish disassembling pallets
  • Clean & stain reclaimed pallet wood
  • Empty bedroom of existing furniture
  • Paint bedroom walls
  • Attempt to have carpets cleaned and/or rip out disgusting carpet & install hardwood – we’re leaning toward the latter
  • Install pallet feature wall
  • Install sconces
  • Build nightstands
  • Assemble new bedroom furniture
  • Mount tv
  • Style & accessorize room

So there you have it. What do you think? Should we try to salvage the carpet or just take the hit & install hardwood like we originally wanted? Anyone out there have a good recommendation on carpet cleaners in the GTA?? Let us know in the comments!

Nooooo Tiger. Poor baby. This is the exact reason I want to replace our carpets upstairs. I swear our cats GO to carpets and rugs to throw up. Henry threw up on our faux cowhide rug the other day when he was like 2 inches away from the wood floors…come on Henry, throw me a bone here. Thankfully we can just wash that rug, carpets can be a pain. Good luck!

Oh no, your poor carpet and your poor kitty! But seriously couldn’t it be a light coloured vomit? CATS! Goodness! Maybe a gorgeous throw rug if the stain doesn’t come out? Something with your beautiful colours? I love the pallet wall, can’t wait to see that!

OMG the cat vomit!!! that sucks so bad!

Oh no, setbacks are not fun! Hopefully you can get back on track. I’m excited to see how your feature wall turns out!

I definitely feel the whole 2 steps forward 3 steps back thing – happens to me every time! I don’t know about carpet cleaning but we have a little Bissell green machine and it cleans up ALL the messes our cats leave for us OR Loblaws rents the big heavy duty machines by the day 🙂

Poor kitty! I love folex to remove spots on carpet, but my husband swears by Oxiclean. Good luck!

Oh the surprises we get sometimes! Deep breaths… I agree with Emy on the Folex. My mom introduced me to that. I found it at Lowes. But if it doesn’t work, bite the bullet and look at wood floors as an “investment” rather than an expense. PLUS, you might find a flooring store offering “0 financing for 6 or 12 months”…that might soften the blow and make it easier to decide upon. 🙂 Good luck!!! It’ll all be worth it in the end. That’s what I always tell my clients. 🙂
