Auctions

Today I got to thinking about how those of us that are passionate about our homes can sometimes do silly and irrational things.  I read this post on Apartment Therapy & it took me back to when we were buying our first home and before we had even moved in, we ran out and bought both dining and bedroom sets!

Let me backtrack – We LOVE furniture auctions!  Both of the “impulse buy” purchases we made were simply because we were out driving on Sunday afternoon & happened upon an auction in progress.  We thought – “it might be fun just to check it out” and end BOTH times ended up having to call in our parents reinforcements to help cart our winnings home.  LOL!

Impulse purchase – 6 pc. bedroom set (bed + 2 night tables + double dresser w/mirror + drawer chest)

So like I said – auctions are awesome. They’re lots of fun, and you can find cool stuff at great prices.  For any of you who have never been to one you should definitely go…BUT there are a few things you should know first:

1. Go there when you’re looking for something specific with the intention of getting it – or you could end up like us buying a 10 pc. dining set with nowhere to store it, no idea how to get it home & no clue whether or not it will actually fit in your space!

2. It’s VERY easy to get overwhelmed – Try not to get caught up in the excitement & the fast pace of the bidding.

3. Measurements, measurements, measurements – make sure you know the sizes of the spaces you’re trying to buy for and the max dimensions on furniture to fit within it.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever bought on an impulse?
