Our Modern Industrial Family Room
We made it to the finish line!!! I can’t begin to tell you how excited (and relieved) I am to be able to say that. Today marks week 6 of the One Room Challenge and we’re revealing one of the largest spaces in the house – our modern industrial family room. This is the first truly ‘finished’ space on the main floor of our home and it feels so amazing to finally be able to walk in and get that first real glimpse of our vision for the Dreamhouse.
If you’re joining us for the first time from Calling it Home, welcome and thanks for stopping by. We’re Tash & Kes and if you’d like to, you can get to know us and a little about our blog here. If you need to go get caught up on our previous weeks for this One Room Challenge, you can check out Week 1, Week 2, Weeks 3/4 & Week 5. But enough of that – I know you’re really just here for the pretty pics. So I won’t keep you from them with my babbling any longer.
Our Modern Industrial Family Room
I’m really proud of everything we accomplished this round. We took on a lot of projects to achieve the look we wanted but in the end it was definitely worth it! Here’s a peek back at where we started from when we first moved in.
The details…
There are so many things I love about this room now! Let me take you through a few of the highlights…
Media Wall
I am so happy with how the media wall turned out! As you can tell, our style is very modern but we love pairing it with rustic industrial elements to warm it up and create good texture. With so many rustic pieces in the room, we wanted the media wall to be very sleek & modern. We achieved that with the high gloss white panels & low profile floating console, but then we stained the wood pieces an aged looking brown-grey to tie in with everything else.
The ambient lighting is one of my favorite parts!
Sectional & Side tables
With such a wide space to work with, we knew we’d need a large sectional. We had one custom made at 130″ wide which fits the space perfectly, but after living with it for a few weeks we realized a couple of things. First, when you’re sitting in the middle of the sofa there’s no place for you to comfortably set down a drink. Sure you can lean forward to place it on the coffee table, but I’m lazy & that just screams of effort. Second, there is a power outlet behind the couch that Kes & I frequently use to plug in our laptops & charge our phones, but getting to it is a real pain. We had a large piece of reclaimed beam that we got from Kes’s friend’s barn, so we decided to use it to create this DIY sofa table insert. It serves to separate the sectional, add a little bit of function and a whole lot of pretty!
We picked up this side table from IKEA and I love how the white glass top picks up on the high gloss panels on the media wall.
The reclaimed barn beam we had was huge so we also decided to match the sectional insert with an end table which we placed between the 2 occasional chairs that we re-finished.
These chairs were my first stab at re-upholstering anything. They ended up being a bit of a labour of love, but they turned out so much better than I expected!
Coffee table
If you remember our DIY Dilema from a few weeks ago, you know Kes was pushing for a new coffee table. I hate to admit it, but he was right.
The table adds the perfect amount of rustic industrial charm to the space. So much so that I decided to create a DIY rustic pulley wall sconce to compliment it.
This light turned out even cooler than I hoped! We actually found this old pulley tied to an old tree & the remnants of a laundry line in our backyard. I love the detail in the engraving. I think it’s especially cool that it was manufactured locally.
Accessories & art
We picked up a lot of the accessories & small pieces for this room at Bouclair Home. They’ve added some really cool pieces to their furniture collection for fall. The console table is one that caught my eye immediately.
Also – that ceiling light is everything!
We also decided to pay homage to a little bit of the history of our neighborhood. After scouring the Pickering Library archives, we found a cool map from the 70’s of our area which was once called Fairport Beach, Ontario. We thought it might be interesting to compare it with a map of the current area and frame them side by side.
So there you have it! Our modern industrial family room. Here’s a final look of the whole thing all put together.
What do you think? We’d love to hear your feedback in the comments below. 🙂
Oh – And if you haven’t yet, DEFINITELY pop over to Calling it Home to check out the reveals of the 20 official ORC participants as well as the other guest participants linking along! It’s modern, but warm and inviting!! I love the colors and the media wall is AMAZING!! Nice work!
Kes @ thedreamhouseproject
Thanks so much. It’s so easy for modern spaces to be stark and cold and we really wanted our place to be cozy.
Besa GM
Love your newly designed living room! Great application of industrial style, where while maintaing the aimed style you still achieved to make it a cosy, welcoming and family oriented room. Love everything in this room!

Thanks Becki ??? The sectional insert and end table were my little passion project and I’m so happy with how they turned out. I’m gonna try to do a DIY post on these soon.

Tash @ thedreamhouseproject
Haha…thanks Jen! Most of the time we just keep the media wall lighting set to warm white, but it’s definitely great to have the option to have some fun with it from time to time depending on my mood. ? Thanks so much for stopping by!
Ariel
Heck ya! This looks fantastic! I LOVE the colours, and the lights, and the paired-down nature of it. I tend to go for more is more is more, but I’m digging your less is less look. Great job guys! <3
